4m33s

OK so where did '4m33s' come from - well "Four Minutes Thirty-three Seconds" was a piece of music by the great John Cage. It's actually a completely silent piece. The pianist comes on stage, sits down at the piano, opens the lid over the keys, then ....... nothing. After each movement he closes the lid, then opens it again. When finished, he stands up, maybe takes a bow, and walks off stage. In one step Cage totally redefined what music could consist of. After that flowed everything else - the boundaries were now down, and along came electronic music, rock music, in fact just about everything that would not previously be considered 'music' could now be listened to and judged on its own merits, and not against some predefined misconception. Basically, he opened the door. What '4m33s' does is try to continue the tradition of experimentalism, minimalism, and above all innovation, but using modern methods - laptops, softsynths, samples, field recordings, etc. and played mainly live too - 4m33s is primarily a live act, and most of the stuff on the albums is actually recorded in one take, that is, each track is the best version of many takes or attempts to get it right, but there is no studio manipulation, to maintain the 'live feel'.
