My Dad died of cancer when he was just 58 years old. I was a young man with a wife and two small children at the time. It was my first taste of death "close up". A few months after Dad died, I sat down to write a song to commemorate his life and all that he meant to me, and this is what I came up with. My Dad will always be my hero.

Looking back on my life and my memories of you;
Daddy, I remember so much we used to do.

We'd go camping in the summertime.
Life was simple, everything was fine.
I learned so much just by watching you.
Oh, Daddy, I love you.

When I was a boy, I looked up to you.
You were my example, and I longed to be like you.

You showed me what it means to be a man;
Taught me to treat people the best that I can.
You never met a stranger, everyone was a friend.
Oh, Daddy, I love you.

Now I'm grown and married, with two kids of my own,
And we'll try, just like you and Mom, to build a happy home.

We'll go camping in the summertime.
Life will be simple, everything will be fine.
And I will try to teach them everything you taught me.
Oh, Daddy, I love you.

Daddy, now you've gone away to meet your reward,
And we know that is what you lived your whole life for.
Daddy, we sure miss you, but please save us a place,
'Cause we are coming up to see you one of these days.

I just wish my kids had had more time to know you,
What a brilliant man you were and all you could do;
But I will tell them what a great man you were, because
I want them to know how special their Paw Paw was.
