$167,450 to Support Live Music and Newly Commissioned Music for Dance in New York City and New Jersey.



New York, NY (1888PressRelease) January 11, 2010 - The American Music Center (AMC) has made grants totaling $167,450 to 25 dance companies in New York City and New Jersey as part of the 2009 round of the Live Music for Dance Program. The program helps dance companies meet the expense of musicians' rehearsal and performance fees, as well as composer commissioning fees for performances happening in New York City or New Jersey. Over the past 23 years, Live Music for Dance has distributed over 500 grants totaling more than $5 million to over 220 dance companies. For the fifth year in a row, thanks to a generous grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the program has included a separate funding category earmarked for New Jersey-based dance companies.

Current and past awardees represent a broad and diverse stylistic range in both arenas of music and dance. The unique nature of this program benefits both large companies performing established repertoire as well as smaller companies presenting new work. Funding from this program will support dance performances with live and/or new commissioned music throughout New York City and New Jersey through May 2010, engaging more than 90 musicians and 21 composers.

This year's grantees include: Ringside (Elizabeth Streb) for "Brave," with music composed and performed by David Van Tieghem; Attila Jelinek Company for "Truth," a new commissioned work by Hahn Rowe performed by ICE; Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company for New commissioned score composed and performed by Glen Velez and four additional musicians; Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company for "Tikkun" featuring a commission from Greg Wall and live music performed by an ensemble of five musicians; Sarah Michelson Group for "Dover Beach" with music created and performed by Peter Drung
