Title: Artistserver down and the weather
Date: Monday, Jan 21, 2008 5:56:29 AM

Was it me or did AS go off line for most of Sunday?Today is the 3rd monday of January and in this part of the world its considered the most depressing day of the year (some married people would argue this!) the theory being that the post Christmas/New year buzz has now well and truely subsided and dispite the days getting slightly longer there is still a long stretch until the weather picks up and the relentless wind and rain abates. Fortunatly today is breezy but also bright and we might just stay dry (no promises) its almost like early Sping in fact. :)

Hi all, it's been awhile since I've posted any news about ArtistServer, so here we go...
1. As you can see, the forums have slowed down again over the holiday season. This seems to happen every year, and usually picks back up near the end of January.
2. We now host 7,600 mp3s! While we did not get to the 10,000 I was hoping for, we've definately grown this year and have attracted many new artists with great material.
3. WTF is with the Video section at ArtistServer? Well - unfortunately, the situation isn't looking good. I had signed up with VideoEgg to be a site that uses thei

While I haven't been posting to my blog, I have been jamming on a lot of work, took a week vacation in Kauai with my family, worked in the yard a lot, had a 5yr anniversary with my wife, and hammered out five updates to ArtistServer in the last two and a half months.
Here's a summary of the last five site updates - I posted these on our forums, but I'm sure this is still news for most people: 1. 05/02/07 - New "Local" section on the site If you are signed into ArtistServer, and click on 'Local' from the main menu, you'll see a page which lists content and people from your loca

Title: Site Redesign Under Development

It's funny how updating one's site is similar to working on your house... you decide you're going to make one change, but then suddenly that one thing grows to 2, then 5 things and then suddenly... you're into all kinds of projects. :) My initial task was to modify the site to expand to a larger width. We are currently designed for 800x600 screen resolution, but as of this year, only 9.7% of the site visitors are using 800x600 - which means we can now scale the site up for a 1024x768 resolution. The new target resolution is 1024x768, which will put us at 990px wide (we gain 220 more pixels i

Title: The Startup Dance, It's Just a Jump to the Left...
Category: Mobile - Web - Media

The last few days, I've been thinking about the balance I'm always dealing with in terms of taking on contract programming jobs to pay the bills, and working on launching a startup.
It was easier a few years ago, when I had one main client that covered all my bills. The rest of my time was spent learning, researching, and developing the platform ArtistServer.com runs on. Those days are gone, and I'm now back to the 'month-to-month' lifestyle of a contract programmer. Most projects only last a few weeks, and with the huge amount of competition out there, I've had to drop my hourly rate each

Title: Optimizing and Scaling Web Apps

After reading about MySpace dealt with their scaling up to support millions of users, I decided it was a good idea to review my application's architechture, and identify what areas could scale independently, and what areas need optimization.
I first outlined the application that generates ArtistServer into seven parts - there's opportunity for optimization everywhere, so by looking at the applicaiton in different ways, I feel you can better identify those optimization points. Application Zones - the site divided into zones of functionalitySub-Applications - areas of the application which

Title: Stats and Data for ArtistServer.com for 2006
Category: ArtistServer

Yes, I'm still here - I've been bypassing the blog for more than a month now, and it's time to get back into it again. Let's begin with some stats and data for any of you out there that are curious as to how well ArtistServer.com did in 2006. I spent this morning pulling data from various places and have compiled a comprehensive look at ArtistServer - covering traffic, revenue, visitors, mp3 stats, and more. Certainly, there's room for improvement and growth, but the numbers aren't bad considering there aren't any full-time employees, nor funding, and we stopped advertising in June 2006.
