ArtistServer.com, adds a new feature for both artists and members, a map of your fans and friends.
Below, you will see a screenshot of the new "Friend Map" that was added to everyone's friend page. It displays the distribution of people who have added you as a friend on ArtistServer.com. The maps are in Flash and interactive. When you click on an icon, a popup container/bubble displays who it is, their message, and a link to their site on ArtistServer.com.
One of the interesting things about seeing this distribution on a map, is that you can see how a band could organize thei

The long awaited photos area/section of ArtistServer is now open for beta testing. This new area of the site adds features and functionality you find on top photo management and sharing sites like Flickr. Both artists and members on ArtistServer can now upload hi-res digital photos, have the site create multiple sizes, organize their photos by category, tags and photo sets, and more. Anyone signed in at ArtistServer can post comments, and we provide a means for site viewers to grab links to photos for sharing. There's category browsing, tag clouds, Creative Commons license support, and there

Services like mp3.com in 1999 could be considered Social Networking 1.0 - where there wasn't much more than loosely organized profiles, music downloads, and forums.
Years later, many new sites pop up on the Web, with photos and videos, friend linking, and widgets and we find ourselves in the 2.0 stage of Social Networking. At that time, I took notice of these changes, and began adding several to ArtistServer, bringing it up to date with what people call "Web 2.0." While the vast majority of the world knows nothing of Web 2.0, they are starting to hear about it, especially about

One thing you can count on... there will always be updates happening at ArtistServer, and here's six new ones to check out: Site Skins Updated - the header bars for song titles, etc now support a background graphic, which is currently a slight bevel. This only applies to the common areas of the site, not artist/member pages. If you are not familiar with what Site Skins are, visit the site and click on the skins button on the top right corner of the site, and select a different skin for the site.Favorites - I updated the favorites widget - it now has a better layout on the listing of items in

When you run a business on your own, it's often stated that the business owner must wear a lot of hats. Like most people, I tend to favor the hats that I can wear well, and shy away from the hats I don't wear so well and demand so much attention. You can do this for awhile, but sooner or later, you either need another head for those tricky hats, or you need to grab on and dive in. Finding the right heads isn't easy, so I recently started wearing the PR/Marketing hat, and have been spending more time considering how to promote what I already have online. People will only listen to you if

Title: Move Over News, Blogs Do It Better

ArtistServer.com and it's previous identity, ElectronicScene.com has always provided artists with a means to post news on the site. A few years ago, we added a free blog with every account, which in some ways was similar to the news tool. What was different between them, is that a news posting is one way, a blog is potentially a two-way coversation. Since the blog section of the site has been seeing a lot more traffic than the news section, I selected to merge all the items posted to the 'news' section of the site to the Blog tool/section.
With blogs, we just don't need a separate news

How many of you noticed a problem with Google yesterday (July 26)? Did you visit any sites where the pages wouldn't fully load, when they usually snap into place? I sure did.
Near 7:00 pm Pacific time, I noticed my site ArtistServer.com running slowly - but it turned out to be Google AdSense. Every page I had AdSense on was not fully loading. In some cases the frame

Every few months, I revist my notes and ideas about the next generation of ArtistServer and try to shape it more. I usually do this by sketching out the interface in a graphics program like Adobe Fireworks. A great site is one with the right combination of: form, function, and content. While I'm sure there are people that don't like how ArtistServer looks or works, I can tell you that many people have emailed and messaged me stating they felt ArtistServer has a great interface.
But - the Web is changing, becoming more interactive, dynamic, and intuitive. It's a media and data rich environ
